about vardanega roberts solicitors

vardanega roberts is an Australian legal practice acting for major insurers (local and international) and self-insurers for the past 26 years in public and products liability, property, professional indemnity, motor, accident and health, workers compensation, motor vehicle personal injury, large loss recoveries and employment law.

vr is a specialist insurance practice. We live and breathe the insurance industry. We have built the business on the back of referrals from deeply satisfied clients and punch above our weight with an impressive client list of Australian based and international clients.

Awards

We have had four independent corporate nominations for insurance team of the year in the Australasian Law Awards 2016.

Partner Michael Roberts has been named in Doyle's Guide 2016 and 2017 as a recommended public liability defendant lawyer in Sydney.

Michael Roberts and Stephen Vardanega were both nominated in Expert Guides for Insurance and Re Insurance work in Australia in August 2017.

Excellence In Our Work

Demonstrated by clients’ consistent high scoring of our performance and ranking.

Trust

Evidenced by our strong relationship with long-standing clients.

Client Focus

Our nimble, dynamic practice strives to understand and evolve with the needs of our clients.

Innovation

In our claims initiatives, our resolution approaches and our risk – shared fee offerings, we actively encourage our team to “do it differently”, “think unshackled” and to continually improve.

Smarter By Choice

We don’t wish to be the biggest nor have the most clients: we want to be the best.

Value Adding

A core part of what we do for clients.

Investment In People

We invest in staff and client education to foster communication, teamwork and excellence.

Collaboration

No one owns a client and resources are deployed where needed. Everyone in our firm has a voice.

Adaption

We are evolving, compelled to become more efficient and meet clients’ needs.

Values Driven

At the heart of vr are our three core values of honesty, fairness and hard work.

Specialist

We are unashamedly narrow and deep in our expertise and focus.
Our pricing models offer:

  • Fee certainty: there will never be fee suprises
  • Shared Risk: If we take longer to do something than estimated, the cost is absorbed by us, not passed onto clients
  • Open Access: Claims staff can contact anyone at vr at any time without being concerned that ‘the clock is ticking’.
  • An Unconditional Service Guarantee: We back ourselves by asking clients to only pay us what they think our work was worth to them.

  • With 44 staff we are a growing specialist firm.
We moved to new, larger premises (1,000 sqm) in December 2015.

What We Offer Our Clients

Local Consultant

We have engaged Colin Ivory as our London consultant. Highly experienced in the Lloyd’s marketplace, Colin is our ‘on the ground in London’ representative for client liaison. Colin will attend meetings relating to particular claims (perhaps ahead of upcoming Settlement conferences, mediations or hearings), or to discuss the progress of the claims we are handling. This allows real time access for London claims staff and underwriters at their convenience.

Market Intelligence

We supplement the intelligence provided by underwriter’s broker networks by keeping clients up to date with market intelligence, from our own networks. We frequently become aware of and share with clients trends and new products that are being developed by industry leaders (whilst never betraying a client’s confidence). We are also acutely aware of trends in judicial approaches to key legislation and proposed legislative reforms.

Legal Updates

We provide “bulletins” of significant judgments in electronic format encompassing necessary detail in a newsletter format; these can also be sent to key brokers and insureds if desired.

Seminars

When we come to London three times each year we provide short but relevant papers presented to claims staff and we will continue to do so for existing and new clients. In addition, by using the power of the internet ‘Webinar’ technology we can offer interactive update sessions with your claims staff on a more regular basis. We have now twice addressed LMA audiences with four talks and have a suite of other presentations we have given to clients in London and locally.

Free Telephone Legal Advice to Brokers and Major Insureds

While we cannot offer this service in relation to coverage matters, we can:

  • Provide telephone legal advice at no cost to brokers and major insureds relating to the running of the broker’s or insured’s business, or on insurance issues unrelated to the policies you offer in our key areas of competency.
  • Offer brokers and major insureds the same rates and service standards we offer to you if they wish to instruct us in non-insurance claim matters.
CALS (Case & Legislative Summaries) and NEL Database in the client space of our website

A sophisticated web based instantaneous publishing system for recent decisions in the client area of our website that keeps our clients and staff up to date with the latest developments in the law in:

  • Recent decisions and legislative changes and how these impact on our clients
  • The quantum of non-economic loss (general damages pain and suffering etc.) components of judgments, which can also be searched via judge name.

Quality Systems

We have stringent self-imposed performance standards and systems in place.
They include:

  • Affinity practice management system.
  • Sophisticated monitoring of work through procedures and decision trees built into holistic practice management LexisNexis software Affinity. Encompasses workflow, diary, email, document production and management, billing, research, precedent library, contact database, accounting, customer relationship, and professional staff management. Customised checklists, email, diary and paper memo based systems that are constantly updated. There is even an electronic portal for current matter information for clients.
  • Information technology.
  • vardanega roberts has a reputation amongst its clients for innovation and effectively using technology to enhance client service delivery. This includes our own ESI electronic document archive system developed in house. Large document sets can be loaded and provide a convenient on line method to access and search for material. ESI conforms to the relevant practice note published by the Supreme Court in 2010 for discovery.
